Detailed
Description
Responsa, novellae, and discourses from R. Zevi Hirsch ben Naftali Hertz Ashkenazi (Bialeh, Halberstadt). The title page states that the contents were assembled from the writings of the gaon R. Zevi Hirsch Halberstadt. It states at the bottom that the reader will find delight for his soul from the responsa on necessary subjects and from the gemarra, Rashi, and Tosafot. The text is in two columns in rabbinic type, excepting headers and initial words. Ateret Zevi begins with responsa, has discourses on such subjects as agunot and Shabbat ha-Gadol, novellae on tractates, hiddushei aggadot, and hiddushim on midrashim.

R. Zevi Hirsch ben Naphtali Herz Bialeh (Halberstadt, 1670–1748) was a German rabbi and rosh yeshivah. He was born in Lemberg. R. Zevi Hirsch served as rabbi of Biala (hence his name) and then as head of a yeshivah in Lemberg. In 1718 he was appointed to Halberstadt (hence his other appellation Zevi Hirsch Halberstadter) where he remained until his death. Because of his acumen he was also called Hirsch Harif ("sharp"). He established a large yeshivah in the town and among its pupils were such outstanding rabbis of the following generation as R. Akiva Eger, R. Isaiah Berlin, and R. Mordecai Halberstadt. He refused to publish his novellae on the grounds that through the continual publication of works by aharonim, students would neglect the rishonim, but glosses and responsa by him can be found scattered in various works of his contemporaries. His works, which were published only after his death, are: Ateret Zevi (1804), comprising responsa, sermons, eulogies, and novellae; Kos Yeshu’ot (1902), Part 1 novellae on Bava Kamma and Shevu'ot, Part 2 on Bava Mezia and other material. He preferred to penetrate deeply into the understanding of the sources, stress the plain meaning of the Talmud, and avoid excessive pilpul. Five of his children were rabbis: R. Solomon Dov Berush in Glogau; R. Naphtali Herz in Dubno; R. Abraham in Rawicz;R. Samuel in Halberstadt; and R. Simhah in Dessau. His brother, R. Israel ben Naphtali Herz (d. 1744) lived in Cleves, Offenbach, and Hanau. His talmudic novellae are contained in his brother's Ateret Zevi. Both in his writings and orally he denounced the prevalent exaggeration of the pilpulistic method; as, for instance, in his approbation to Jehiel Michael's "Nezer ha-Ḳodesh." In general he seems to have followed the logical method, and to have preferred the simple interpretation of the Talmud.
