Detailed
Description
On the mitzvah of covering the blood of undomesticated animals with the commentary metamim by R. Jacob Ben-Zion ben Menahem ha-Kohen Mendelson. There are five pages of approbations from a large number of prominent rabbis and an introduction from the author. The text of ha-Zeed is in twelve chapters, covering such subjects as the basic mitzvah, the blessings when many animals are slaughtered, when there is a halakhic obligation and the conditions when there is no such requirement, when blood of animals requiring covering is mixed with the blood of animals that do not have such a requirement, if the blood is not covered or covering is delayed, who may cover the blood, preventing one from fulfilling the mitzvah, appropriate covering material, etc. The text is in a single column in square letters. It is comprised of the halakhic matter on the top of the page accompanied by the commentary on the bottom of the page. The mitzvah is that blood must be covered after the shehitah. This applies to birds and undomesticated animals (hayyot). It is done by placing sand or soil underneath, slaughtering, and then spreading more soil over the split blood, at which time a special benediction is pronounced. One of the reasons given for this procedure is that these animals owe nothing to man (as opposed to domesticated animals) and thus their slaughter is more shameful.

R. Jacob Ben-Zion ben Menahem ha-Kohen Mendelsohn, was born in Kreuzberg in 1875 and died in Newrk, N. J. in 1941. He was the author of several other works, among them Midrash Yabetz, Mishnat Yabetz, and Sha’arei Zion.
