Detailed
Description
Limited numbered copy of the festschrift made up of articles by the leading scholars in contemporary German Jewry in honor of the fiftieth birthday of Dr. Joseph Nobel. The volume begins with a table of contents, a page of verse (sonett), a dedication (widmung) and the text, which is divided into three parts. They are Dem Denker (the philosopher). In this part are articles by Hermann Cohen (1842-1918), Briefe über Gottfried Keller; on Cohen (zu seinem 70. Geburstag, von N. A. Nobel); Eduard Strauss (1876-1950), Mystik, freir Geist und Offenbarung; Siegfried Kracauer (1889-1966), Gedanken über Freundschaft; Rudolph Hallo (1896-1933), Figur und Idee; Ernst Simon (1902-73), Platon und die Tragödie; and Leo Löwenthal, Das Dämonische. The second part is Dem Prediger (the preacher), with articles by Joseph Prager, Von Predigen-Hören; Max Michael, der Kanzelpredpredigt; and Martin Buber (1878-1965), Drei Predigten. The final part is Dem Führer (the leader) with articles by Eugene Mayer, “Räumet, räumt, macht Bahn”; Robert Weiss, Jüdischer Socialismus; and Franz Rosenzweig (1886-1929), Häusliche Feir. At the beginning of the book is a photo portrait, presumably of Dr. Noble. The text is primarily in square letters but the Sonnet and Franz Rosenzweig’s Häusliche Feir are in Fraktur. The latter, in versified form, begins each the first letter in each line green. The writers assembled in this work represent some of the most important and intellectually influential thinkers in German Jewry before the war. This copy is number 114 of 125 issued.
