Description		    Only edition. [1], 80 ff., 307:185 mm., usual light age staining, nice margins, stamps, pale blue paper. A very good copy bound in modern half cloth and marbled paper boards.

Description		    R. Zevi Hirsch b. Benjamin Baschko (1740–1807), was the last to occupy the position of rabbi (which he held from 1802) of the joint communities of Altona, Hamburg, and Wandsbek (the "Three Communities") before the union was dissolved. Born in Zamosc, Poland, of a distinguished family, he was rabbi first of Tischwitz (Tyszowce), then from 1771 of Brody, and from 1788 of Glogau, where he established an important yeshivah. He was one of the greatest rabbis of his day; among those who addressed halakhic questions to him were R. Isaiah Berlin, R. Solomon Zalman Fuerth, R. Phinehas Horowitz of Frankfort, and R. Meir Posner, while R. Ezekiel Landau and R. Akiva Eger referred to him in unusually high terms of esteem. He wrote Tiferet Zevi, responsa on the Shulhan Arukh in two parts, the first on Orah Hayyim and Yoreh De'ah (Warsaw, 1816) and the second on Even ha-Ezer (Jozsefov, 1867). His responsa also appear in the works of contemporary rabbis. Some of his commentaries and homilies are still in manuscript. He died in Ottensen, near Altona, and was buried at Altona, his tombstone bearing the inscription, "There arose none, nor will there ever be another, like him." His sons were also rabbis: R. Moses at Tomaszow, and R. Judah Loeb at Komarno.
          
Paragraph 2    על (אורח חיים ויורה דעה), שאלות ותשובות שחיבר... ר' צבי הירש זצלה"ה שהיה מקדם אב"ד בק"ק בראד ואחר כך נתקבל לק"ק גלוגא רבתי ומשם נתקבל לאב"ד לשלש קהלות אלטונ' המבורג וונזבוג... ומנוחתו כבוד שם... העיר ד' את... בנו... מהו' משה נ"י אב"ד דק"ק טאמשוב... להביא לבית הדפוס... חלק מנוסח השער בדיו אדומה. בשער: היום יום א ג אב שנת חותמו לאמת לפ"ק [תע"א!].

בן המחבר הדפיס את השער ואת הדף שלאחריו גם בלבוב, בדפוס נפתלי הירץ גרושמאן. הפרט בשער כבדפוס ווארשא בתוספת התאריך הלועזי: 1816. נראה, שעשה כן כדי לאפשר הפצת הספר ב"מדינת קיר"ה", היינו בגאליציה, שהיתה אז בשלטון אוסטריה. משום כך השמיט מהקדמתו, בספרו על שמות החתומים, את התיבות "במדינות פולניא". כן לא הזכיר את גזירת החרם שלו ושל המסכימים שלא להדפיס את הספר, משום שבאוסטריה נאסרה הכרזת "חרם" והוא מסתפק בהודעה "שבמדינתינו מדינת קיר"ה הוא אסור להדפיס לשום אדם בעולם בלתי רשות מהמחבר". שינוי נוסף שנעשה בטעות הוא התאריך שבסוף ההקדמה: יום כ"ד אב במקום: יום ב ד אב. עיין על שנת הדפוס בשער "וארשא" ועל השער דפוס לבוב: שלום לבי"א, פנת יקרת, ברוקלין נוא יארק תשכ"ח, עמ' 67.
