Two independent works bound together. The first title is Derashot from Ramban (Nahmanides, R. Moses ben Nahman, 1194–1270), which the title page states he delivered in Catalonia before the king and nobles. This discourse is on theimportance of the Torah and the people of Israel. It is with numerous corrections that are inearleir editions. There is an approbation from R. Jacob ben Gamliel of Mecklenberg and then the derasha, which is known today as, Torat ha-Shem Temimah. It was, apparently, delivered after the disputation of Barcelona.
Se’ah Solet, the second title, is an ethical work on the essentials of life by R. Raphael ben Gabriel Norzi (Norsa, da Norcia, 1520–1583?). R. Norzi, a member of the distinguished and influential family of that name, served as rabbi in Ferrara and Mantua. Little else is known of Norzi, except that he was the author of these three works. The title page states, “Se’ah Solet (fine flour), sifted in a sieve, ‘[there is none like him in the earth], a blameless and upright man, one who fears God, and turns away from evil’ (Job 1:1, 8; 2:3) as Raphael of Norzi ben Gabriel. . . .” The publisher notes that this work, great in value but small in size, is full of wisdom and fear of God. Therefore, for the public good, he is republishing it, correcting whatever printer errors were in the first edition. The title page has the publication date of the first edition, 1579. At the end of the volume is Orhot Hayyim according to Asheri. |
