Description		    [4], 582 pp. 190:115 mm., wide crisp margins in gild, linen endpapers, usual light age and damp staining, old German inscription on fly. A very good copy bound in contemporary red leather boards tooled in blind with gold clasps and corner pieces. Volume 2 of 2 only.

Description		    Comprehenisve bi-lingual Hebrew German mahzor for Rosh HaShanah and Yom Kippur from R. Joseph Von Maier. The full title is Israelitische Gebetordnung für Synagoge und Schule (Order of Prayers for Synagogue and School), Bearbeitete und aus Auftrag der Königl. Württemb. Oberkirchenbehörde herausgeben von Dr. Joseph Maier, Kirchenrath und Rabbiiner zu Stuttgart, that is, it was worked on and published by R. Maier with the approval of the authorities. The mahzor is in two parts. The first, significantly smaller part are selihot prior to Rosh HaShanah and between Rosh HaShanah and Yom Kippur. The Hebrew text is on the right side, the German translation facing it on the left. Initial words in the German paragraphs are given in Hebrew. Within the Hebrew brief instructions are given in German. Small portions of the prayers translated earlier are given are repeated entirely in Hebrew. The volume has complete prayers for both holidays attractively printed on good paper. The German is in Fraktur.

R. Joseph Von Maier was born in 1797 and died at Stuttgart Aug. 19, 1873. He was president of the first rabbinical conference held at Brunswick in 1844, and he was also a member of the Jewish Consistory of Württemberg. In recognition of his many philanthropic activities and of his participation in all the spiritual movements of the day he was ennobled by the King of Württemberg. This gave him the distinction of being the first German rabbi belonging to the nobility.
