R. Hayyim Aryeh Loeb b. Saul ha-Levi Horowitz (1851-1904) was born in Brody where his father served as rabbi. He was educated by his grandfather R. Meshullam Isaacher rabbi of Stanislaw. Gifted with a photographic memory, R. Horowitz memorized all the works he read and studied, and had a good working knowledge of general topics. After his marriage he moved to Cracow, where his in-laws supported his studies. He organized an elite yeshiva which attracted wealthy students as the education included secular subjects. During his short lifespan he served as rabbi of Zolkiev (1779-1885) where his strong willed methods created controversy. In 1888 he was appointed rabbi of Cracow, where Hasidim opposed him because of his Yeshiva; he prevailed and was eventually elected rabbi, where he served until his passing. An erudite scholar and elegant orator he wrote: Zikhron Moshe (Cracow 1886), eulogy for Sir Moses Montefiore; Tikkun Eiruvin (Cracow 1887) responsa affirming the validity of the Cracow eiruv constructed by the Author; Kol Nehe (Cracow 1889) eulogy on Prince Rudolph; Ezrat Niduhim (Podgorze 1904) on the redemption of abandoned children.
