Eulogy for R. Binush Katzenelson. The title page states that it is Givat Binyamin (“Geba of Benjamin” (I Samuel 13:15), “a grievous mourning” (Genesis 50:11) for R. Binush Katzenelson of Kiev who died on Erev Shabbat 5 Kislev 5696 (November 22, 1895), delivered by the well known Rav, R. Isaac Danzig ben Manush. Givat Binyamin was published due to the efforts of the well known philanthropist R. Aryeh Leib Friedland. A second title page, also in Hebrew, states that it is “a grievous mourning” and a “bitter lamentation” (Jeremiah 6:26) for a great man, truly pious, outstanding in Torah, with a pure fear of G-d, a giver of charity, who did good, etc. The eulogy was delivered Monday, 15 Kislev 5696 (December 2, 1895) in the great bet medrash of the Sephardim in Petrograd, amd they lamented over him. R. Danzig is described as the author of Bet Yizhak, Ba’er Yizhak, Alon Bechot, Mezvot Even, and books on the principles of the Torah.
There is an introduction by R. Danzig who here gives the name of the deceased as Benjamin (Binyamin) Binush ha-Kohen Katzenelson. Included are several letters from prominent rabbis concerning the decease, and then the text of the eulogy, which is in a single column in rabbinic type, excepting headers and initial words. Included witht this eulogy for Katzenelson are eulogies for R. Jekuthiel Zalman Landau, who died on 26 Tevet 5655 (Tuesday, January 26, 1895), and Sir Moses Montefiore, who died on Tuesday, 16 Menahem Av 5645 (July 28, 1885). |
