Description
Transcript of important Frankfurt community documents relating to the rabbinate. Copied from the original documents, many of which are no longer extant. Among the documents are the community's rabbinical engagement letter to R. Mendlin Bass in 1646; rabbinical engagement letter to R. Samuel b. Zevi of Cracow, author of Masoret ha-Shass in 1690; unsuccessful letter from the community of Lisa asking Frankfurt to withdraw their rabbinical engagement letter to their rabbi, R. Abraham Abish, R. Abraham Abish is noted for the Cleve Divorce controversy that roiled Europe in the 18th century; letter by above accepting the Frankfurt position; letter to Prague seeking the appointment of the Noda be-Yehudah as Frankfurt rabbi, in deference to R. Abraham Abish the offer was declined; a 1741 offer to the Pnei Yehoshua for the rabbinical position; letter dated 1785 seeking to save R. Nathan Adler from expulsion or prison as a result of a snitch, who reported that R. Adler had started a minyan (quorum) at his house in Boskowitz against royal orders; three witness reports in the Cleve Divorce proceeding; and a report in German to R. Simeon Copenhagen in the same matter.
