R. Levi Isaac Grunwald of Zelem (1893-1980) emigrated to the United States in 1938 and was responsible for bringing kashrut to this country. Fighting the tide of American indifference and assimilation he was the first to organize kosher milk (Cholev Yisrael), glatt kosher meat, and many other important religious improvements. The Forward published cartoons of the rabbi supervising a cow dressed in a prayer shawl exiting a mikveh to belittle and hopefully kill his efforts - the Rabbi prevailed, the Yiddish Forward died!
