Detailed
Description
Twenty two discourses by R. Menahem Zion ben Solomon Zalman Rabino (d. 1681). Menahem served as rabbi in Vladislav, Russian Poland, and afterwards as dayyan in Cracow. This is his only known work. The title page has a decorative frame made up of rows of florets, and between the rows on each side is a biblical verse, each with the word Zion. The text states that it is Nehamot Ziyyon, Rejoice in בך 22 discourses more desirable than fine gold. At “the time of love” (Ezekiel 16:8), festivals (yom tovim), they are established, [Rosh Hodesh], [Yom ha-Kippurim], as distinguished festivals (regalim) and appointed seasons, sharp and pointed. Who celebrates in them will rejoice and be glad. The title page dates the beginning of the work to the fifth day, the day that Moses ascended above, the 26th day of the tenth month (Tevet), “And I will put a division” (Exodus 8:19) תז"ל (437 = Thursday December 10, 1676). There is no printer’s name. The first approbation is signed by seven rabbis from Little (katan) Poland, the second approbation is from R. Aryeh Judah Leib ben Menahem Mendel of Nikolsburg. Menahem’s introduction follows, in which he writes that he will see the comforting of Zion (nehamot ziyyon) for I did not do this for my honor, but that “a man is like the tree of the field” (Deuteronomy 20:19) “and his days are like a passing shadow” (Psalms 144:4), today here, tomorrow in the grave, and not everyone merits two attached tables, except for the one who says a halakhah in his name.

The text follows, set in two columns, separated by a line, in rabbinic type, excepting headers and initial words. The twenty two discourses are numbered as being divided into seven parts (except that there is no part two), on the Exodus, giving of the Torah, sounding of the shofar, Shabbat Shabbaton, boughs of goodly trees (פרי עץ הדר), and showers of blessing (גשמי ברכה). After each discourse are sources for that discourse. Nehamot Ziyyon concludes with Menahem’s apology for any errors, for the printers were not Jewish and work was done on the Sabbath and festivals when it could not be reviewed. Completion of the work is dated to Friday, the 4th day of the third month (Sivan), תז"ל (437 = June 4, 1677).
