Description		    Psalms with a Yiddish translation and commentary by Naphtali Gross (1896–1956), Yiddish poet and folklorist. Born in Kolomea, Galicia, he emigrated to the U.S. in 1913 and worked as a typesetter and as a teacher in Yiddish schools. His first published poems appeared in the Montreal Jewish Daily Eagle. From 1943, Gross was on the staff of the New York Jewish Daily Forward where, from 1946, he wrote a weekly column Mayselekh un Mesholim ("Little Stories and Parables"), based on stories from readers. They appeared in collected form (Mayselekh un Mesholim) in 1955, illustrated by his brother, the artist Chaim Gross. Naphtali Gross' major poetic works are Psalmen ("Psalms," 1919), Der Vayser Rayter ("The White Horseman," 1925), and Idn ("Jews," 2 vols., 1929 and 1938). In the 1920s, his neo-Romantic poems and ballads deviated from the dominant literary trend, and he was criticized by many for his preoccupation with religious motifs and with the idealization of the shtetl ("small town") at a time of revolution. Gross was also a successful translator. His translation of the Five Scrolls ranked him after only Yehoash as a Yiddish translator of the Bible. With Abraham Rejzen, he translated the poems of Solomon ibn Gabirol. His collected poems Lider (1958) contain a bibliography by E. H. Jeshurin.
