Detailed
Description
On Hebrew grammar by R. Alexander Sueskind ben Samuel Zanvil. The title page has the frame with the obelisk at top that had belonged previously to Benjamin Wolf, court Jew of Dessau and used at this and other presses that inherited his typographical material. The title page is dated, “And a highway shall be there, and a way, and it shall be called The Way of Holiness” (Isaiah 35:8). The colophon dates completion to, “to the utmost bound of the everlasting hills; they shall be . . .” (Genesis 49:26). There is an approbation from R. Joseph Isaac ben Joseph of Dessau followed by the author’s introduction. Below it is a large attractive tail-piece, repeated after the colophon. A brief introduction from the author is followed by the editors preface and then the text, which is in two columns in rabbinic letters, excepting headers, initial words, and examples within the text, the latter often vocalized. There is a foldout chart of the ta’amim between 40b and 41a.

A R. Samuel Zanvil, perhaps an antececedent of R. Alexander Sueskind ben Samuel Zanvil, was, together wth other Jews in Cracow, the subject of false accusations and burned at the stake in that city in 1631. Derekh ha-Kodesh is one of only five books to have been printed in Koethen. The printer, Israel ben Abraham, was a proselyte. w. In order for him to print in Koethen it was necessary for the city to accommodate his Jewish workers. Since they were not allowed to reside in the city, Israel ben Abraham left Koethen for Jessnitz, where he did not face the same obstacles.
