Detailed
Description
Emanuel Mendel Baumgarten (1828–1908), economist, communal leader, German and Hebrew journalist, poet, writer, and publisher. Born in Kremsier (Krom#1E9, Moravia), Baumgarten studied at yeshivot and, later, economics at the University of Vienna. Apart from contributing to the German and Jewish press, he edited the economic paper Der Fortschritt and in 1865–66 the Hebrew periodical Beit ha-Midrash (with I. H. Weiss). As a successful businessman, Baumgarten was elected to the council of the Israelitische Allianz (1873) and the Jewish Theological Seminary of Vienna (1893). He did much to assist Russian and Rumanian pogrom victims seeking refuge in Austria. He assisted P. Smolenskin with his monthly Ha-Shahar and Jehiel Brill with his colonization plans in Palestine. Among Baumgarten's published works are: the first translation into German of Bahya ibn Paquda's Hovot ha-Levavot with an appendix entitled Arugat Perahim, containing biographies by S. G. Stern of Bahya, ibn Tibbon, and J. Kimhi (1854); a Hebrew poem, Ruth (1865); and Juden in der Steiermark (1903). Baumgarten edited some apologetic works about the blood libel and in defense of the Talmud; Israel Fraenkel's Yeshu'at Yisrael, a chronicle of Moravian Jewry (1898); and Abraham Broda's Megillat Sedarim, on the expulsion of the Jews from Aussee (1895; cf. his "Zur Maehrisch-Ausseer Affaere," in Gedenkbuch zur Erinnerung an D. Kaufmann, 1900). In 1899, on the occasion of his 70th birthday, his sons published a Festschrift in his honor, Unserem theueren Vater, Emanuel Baumgarten an seinem 70. Geburtstag.
