Description		    Discourses for Shabbat by R. Hayyim Beja. The title is from, “for there the Lord has commanded the blessing, life for evermore (hayyim ad ha-olam)” (Psalms 133:3). A decorative frame on the title page comprised of florets surrounds the text, which states that this book, “The wage of the righteous leads to life” (Proverbs 10:16). Itinforms that it was edited R. Hayyim ben Jacob Albalai and printed in Izmir in, “You shall arise, and have mercy תרחם (648 = 1888) upon Zion” (Psalms 102:14). There is an introductory approbation on the verso of the title page from R. Hayyim Palaggi. It is followed by the text in two columns in rabbinic type, excepting headers and initial words, which are in square letters. The derashot, of which there are several on each topic, are on Shabbat Teshuvah (twelve discourses) for ha-Levisha (twelve discourses), Shabbat Zekhor (six discourses), and Shabbat ha-Gadol (three discourses).

R. Beja was born in Thessaloniki in 1805 and died in Tyre in 1880. It is possible that his family came from Portugal, taking the name of that city, which was next to Santarem, the oldest Jewish community in Portugal.
