Description		    First edition of Shitah Mekubbezet on several tractates published by R. Jacob ben Abraham Faitusi. The title page describes the title of the book, Mizbah Kapparah, as a notarikan (a system of abbreviations here by utilizing the first letter of each word) for the tractates addressed by the novellae in the volume, that is, מ Menahot,ז Zevahim, בBekhorot, and חHullin, that is, Mizbah מזבח. This method is the 30th of the 32 hermeneutical rules of the Baraita of 32 Rules. The title page states that it is from the early geonim, (may their merit protect us) who can express their might. R. Faitusi states that he has called the work by a name not used previously, which at the time was correct. The title page enumerates the names of the sages included here and attributes the novellae on Hullin to Nahmanides. Also included is Ronu le-Ya’akov, R. Faitusi’s own commentary, on tractates Hullin and Temurah. The title page is dated, “and shout for joy, all you who are upright כל ישרי (570 = 1810) in heart” (Psalms 32:11). There are approbations from nine rabbis in Jerusalem and an introduction from the author, each of its eight paragraphs beginning with the word rishon, the page being completed with an attractive tail-piece. The text follows, set in two columns in rabbinic type, excepting headers and initial words, which are in square letters. Ronu le-Ya’akov also includes novellae on several other tractates and there are six homilies in praise of the Land of Israel. The volume concludes with addenda to additional tractates.

R. Jacob ben Abraham Faitusi (d. 1812) was a Jerusalem emissary and talmudist. He was born in Tunis and emigrated to Jerusalem around 1800. In 1806 he became an emissary of Jerusalem to Tripoli, Tunisia, and Algeria. He also published Berit Ya’akov (Leghorn, 1800), including the Shitah Mekubbezet of Bezalel Ashkenazi to tractate Sotah, the Likkutei G’'onim of various authors on tractates Nedarim and Nazir, and Likkutim on tractate Nazir by Abraham ibn Musa, to which he appended Sha’arie Zedek by Levi b. Gershom on the 13 hermeneutical principles and an original work on the subject entitled Yagel Ya'akovMareh ha-Ofanim (ibid., 1810) including the novellae of Asher b. Jehiel on Sotah and his own commentary, Yagel Ya’akov, on Pesahim, Bezah, Rosh Ha-Shanah, Avodah Zarah, and Makkot. Faitusi died in Algeria, while on a mission there. His son, R. Hayyim David, published R. Faitusi’s Yerekh Ya'akov (ibid., 1842), homilies on the Pentateuch and the Five Scrolls, together with Kokhav mi-Ya'akov, novellae on the Talmud and responsa.
