Detailed
Description
Enlarged and expanded edition, here with added commentary on the Sabbath and holy-day prayers of this popular kabbalistic work on the siddur by R. Shimon Akiba Baer ben Joseph (17th century). The author, referred to here as R. Shimon Akiba Baer ben Joseph but otherwise known as R. Akiba Baer ben Joseph was a renowned talmudist and kabbalist. He was among the Jews who were expelled from Vienna in 1670. He thereafter wandered through the whole of Bohemia and parts of Germany, earning his living by teaching Talmud and delivering lectures in the synagogue on the Sabbath, until elected rabbi of Burgpreppach, in Bavaria. It was there that he wrote this kabbalistic commentary – it took him a year to complete - to the daily prayers entitled Avodat ha-Bore, comprised of five parts, each beginning with one of the letters of his name (A.K.I.B.A.) When this edition was published additional material, for Sabbath and holidays, was added.

This edition has new approbations as well as those for the earlier editions, from R. David Oppenheim, R. Menahem Mendel Ashkenazi, R. Issacher Berman ben David Isaac Zekel Frankel, R. Dov ben Israel Issurel of Vien, R. Abrham Naftali Hirsch ben Moses Spitz, r. Jehiel Michael ben Aryeh Segal, R. Zevi Hirsch ben Yerahmiel Hatsch of Cracow, R. Moses ben Saul Ketzellenbogen, and R. Joseph son of the author. Within the volume the text is in two columns; prayers are in vocalized Hebrew in the inner column, the commentary in rabbinic type in the outer column.

Some time after completing this work R. Akiba Baer renewed his travels, interrupting them a second time to become rabbi of Zeckendorf, near Bamberg. There he met the leader of the community, R. Seligman Levi Meir, with whom he composed a short encyclopedia to Midrash Rabbah, which was published under the title Pi Shenayim ("A Double Share," 1702). He remained in Zeckendorf six years. From there R. Akiba Baer was called to Schnaitach, which at that time had a large Jewish community. There he was imprisoned during a riot. After his release, R. Akiba Baer became rabbi of Gunzenhausen and, finally, second rabbi of Ansbach. He was the author of two works in Yiddish, which had even a wider circulation than his Hebrew works, namely: Abbir Ya’akov ("The Mighty [G-d] of Jacob," 1700), a collection of legends from the Zohar and from the Midrash ha-Ne'elam about the patriarchs, based on the first 47 chapters of Genesis; “Ma'asei HaShem” ("The Deeds of the L-rd") a collection of wondrous stories from the Zohar, from the works of R. Isaac Luria, and from other kabbalistic books.
