Detailed
Description
Attractive pocket edition of the Song of Songs (Shir ha-Shirim) with Targum. The title page has a decorative border made up of florets and states that it is Shir ha-Shirim which it is the custom to recite on Pesah with the Targum (Aramaic translation) for each verse according to the city of Anina. There the custom was to say it with its Targum, in keeping with, “Withhold not good from them to whom it is due” (Proverbs 3:27). The title page contains an admonition against trespass, stating that one should be careful with the Torah’s caution, “You shall not remove your neighbor’s landmark” (Deuteronomy 20:14) for a period of five years. It was brought to press by R. Elijah Moses Zafranah and is dated, “rightly מישרים (600 = 1840) they love you” (Song of Songs 1:4). The text is in a single column in vocalized Hebrew, comprised of alternating lines of Hebrew and the Aramaic translation (Targum).

The Song of Songs is included in the liturgy of Passover. It is read on the Intermediate Sabbath where there is one; when the first day of Passover falls on Sabbath it is read in Israel on the first day and in the Diaspora on the eighth. Under kabbalistic influence it was instituted as a voluntary reading before the Friday evening service, being observed by Sephardi Jews, particularly during the Sabbaths between Passover and Shavuot.
