Detailed
Description
Jacob Alting (1618-1679) became professor for Oriental languages at the University of Groningen in 1643. The first Latin edition of his Hebrew grammar appeared in 1654, and the first Dutch edition was published in 1664. Alting devotes the large opening part (pp. 1-181) to an accurate explication of the vocalizations rules of Hebrew. At the end he also includes some Hebrew correspondence, dealing with the acquistion of books as well as attempting to convince his Jewish correspondent to convert to Christianity. Alting's grammar was very popular and went through several editions.
