Description		    Responsa and discourses from R. Abraham Joseph Samuel ben Israel Jonah Landau of Kempen (1799-1836). R. Landau belonged to a well-known rabbinical family. His father, R. Israel Jonah ben Joseph ha-Levi (Me'on ha-Berakhot, d. 1824) was av bet din of Lubomil and from 1786 served in Kempen, Posen region. R. Abraham Joseph Samuel Landau was appointed to succeed his father as rabbi of Kempen on the recommendation of no less a personage than R. Akiva Eger (1761-1837). Kur ha-Behinah is the only part of his most important work, Mishkan Shiloh, to have been published.

Kur ha-Behinah is comprised of twenty-five responsa and seven discourses. The title page, which gives R. Landau’s name as Joseph Samuel ha-Levi Landau, states that the initial letters of Joseph Samuel equal the initial letters of his name. It then goes on to list his distinguished genealogy, going back over several centuries to Rashi. There are approbations from R. Zalman ben Abraham Tiktin, R. Moses Sifer (Hatam Sofer), and R. R. Akiva Eger. On 2a-3b is the author’s testament. The heading states that the author died while the book was in press before it could be completed; Because of the great desire to see his testament it is printed here. There is an introduction from r. Landau’s son-in-law, R. Hayyim ha-Kohen followed by the text. The volume concludes with an index of the responsa and discourses.
