Detailed
Description
Two separate works, printed in Jerusalem, from earlier Sephardic sages, bound together. The first title, Ro’ei Yisrael, is in turn comprised of three parts, being the collected decisions of three prominent eighteenth century rabbis, namely R. Judah ben Yom Tov Kazin, Raphael Solomon ben Samuel Laniado, and the latter’s son R. Ephraim Laniado. The first part is R. Kazin’s Mahaneh Yehudah, the second part is responsa of R. Laniado, and the final part is the responsa of R. Ephraim Laniado, who the title page describes as the author of Degel Mahaneh Ephraim, which is the second work bound in this volume. Ro’ei Yisrael has an introduction and index prepared by R. Shalom Haida. Degel Mahaneh Ephraim is responsa on all four parts of the Shulhan Arukh.

R. Judah ben Yom Tov Kazin (1708–1783), rabbi and halakhic authority of Aleppo, whose rabbinical office he filled for many years. Kazin was involved in the controversy which broke out among the rabbis of Aleppo over the imposition of the authority of the local rabbis on the "Francos" (Jewish merchants of Western European origin who arrived in Aleppo during the late 17th century). The chief rabbi R. Raphael Solomon Laniado demanded that the local customs be imposed on them, while the rabbis of Aleppo, led by R. Kazin, were opposed to this. During his last years he wrote Mahaneh Yehudah (Leghorn, 1803), which includes his arguments concerning this controversy and the approbations of the rabbis of Aleppo and Jerusalem. It appears that with the deaths of R. Laniado and R. Kazin at the end of the 18th century the dispute subsided. R. Kazin also wrote responsa, which form the first part of the work Ro'ei Yisrael (1904), and sermons, Ve-Zot li-Yhudah (still in Ms.).

R. Raphael Solomon ben Samuel Laniado, (d. 1793), rabbi and halakhic authority. Born in Aleppo, R. Laniado was rabbi there from 1740 until his death. He was noted for his firmness which left no place for compromise. In the 1760s he was the cause of a stormy controversy within the Jewish community of Aleppo, when he sought to impose the authority of the rabbis and the local community customs on the Francos. Led by R. Judah ben Yom-Tov Kazin, the other rabbis of the town opposed him realizing that such a demand would be harmful. This controversy continued over several years, and it is uncertain when it came to an end. R. Laniado's works include: Beit Dino shel Shelomo ("Tribunal of Solomon," Constantinople, 1775), responsa; Lehem Shelomo ("The Bread of Solomon," ibid., 1775), various innovations in halakhah; Ha-Ma'alot li-Shelomo ("Degrees of Solomon," ibid., 1775), homiletics; and Kisse Shelomo ("The Throne of Solomon," Jerusalem, 1901). Some of his responsa were also published in Ro'ei Yisrael ("Shepherds of Israel," Jerusalem, 1904).
