Detailed Description |
|
Printed thank-you letter to contributors for the writing of a Sefer Torah by R. Joseph Elijah Fried. The document is addressed to Judah b. Samuel Katzenellenbogen of 66 Canal Street of the Lower East Side of Manhattan. R. Fried is the author of Ohel Joseph (New York 1903), various responsa that reveals the social conditions of New York City circa 1900. The responsa include such problems as if one may construct a sukkah on the fire escape as the total space is below the amount required by halacha. Another deals with allowing non-observant Kohanim to join the priestly services on the Holidays. May one use the ferry on the Sabbath to come to synagogue? How does one form an "eiruv" in a tenement with gentile neighbors? |
