Detailed
Description
On according a proper burial by R. David Solomon Slouschz (1852-1906) written in response to an incident in Odessa. The title page states that Menuhat Shalom contains the clear halakhah concerning the burial of a person, according to the laws of the Torah, writings, and tradition. It also relates the tale in Ketubbot of the death of R. Judah ha-Nasi. The verso of the title page has introductory words, beginning among the ten most difficult things created, one more difficult than the other, the most bitter is death. Next is the text, in two columns in rabbinic type. The first paragraph relates the incident that caused R. Slouschz to write this work. It states that one of the leading personalities in Odessa, among the most honorable men of the Brody Synagogue, who fulfilled his duties as the congregational representative through his cantorial services, was R. Nissan Blumenthal, who served for sixty years. After his death he was not accorded a proper burial place, according to his position and service. The community was obligated to show him that last kindness, to a man beloved by all. Now after three years, they want to rebury him in a more honorable place and have turned to R. Slouschz to find a possible lenience allowing them to rebury R. Blumenthal. R. Slouschz has reviewd the issue in depth in both Talmuds, and this work is his findings.

R. Nissan Blumenthal (1805–1903), whose reburial is the subject of this work, was a Russian cantor. He was born in Berdichev, Ukraine, where he became cantor at the age of 21. He later served in Yekaterinoslav (Dnepropetrovsk), and from 1841 until his death held the position of chief cantor at the Brody Synagogue in Odessa. His main contribution to the music of the synagogue was the founding of a choir school in Odessa, where he developed choral singing in four voices, an innovation at that time. Contrary to the wishes of the traditionalists, he introduced into the liturgy melodies from German classical music. He was nevertheless a lover of tradition and succeeded in effecting a synthesis of old and new. Few of his melodies appeared in print, but they were preserved by other cantors and some are still sung.
