Detailed
Description
Discourses on the weekly parasha and other subjects by R. Judah ben Elijah ibn Danon. The title page, printed in blue, has a lengthy text that begins that the author’s intent is towards the Holy One, this is my offering that I have brought, a commentary on biblical works and novellae, pure sayings, mpre precious than gold and fine pearls, “dividing the flames of fire” (cf. Psalms 29:7), in the heart of each and every man, to return to the Lord with all his heart, to serve God while the living soul is still within him. It is dated with the verse, “And the Lord shall inherit Judah as his portion” (Zechariah 2:16). The verso of the title page has a dedication followed by five pages with a photograph of three palm trees and the verse, “She is a tree of life to those who lay hold on her; and happy is every one who holds her fast” (Proverbs 3:18) and at the bottom the verse, “The righteous flourish like the palm tree; he grows like a cedar in Lebanon” (Psalms 92:13). On both sides of the photo graph are lists of names, presumably of subscribers who made publication possible. Next is a photograph of the author, a distinguished looking man with a long white beard. The author’s introduction follows, then approbations from rabbis in Fez. The text is set in two columns in rabbinic type, excepting headers and initial words. The beginning of each parashat is set in a frame. Entries are relatively brief and insightful. After the Torah portion are similar discourses on books of the Bible, including several pages on Eishet Hail.
