Detailed
Description
Oversized attractively printed edition of Tractate Berakhot by the Zirndorfer press in Fuerth. It is one of a small number of tractates printed by the renowned Zindorfer press. The printer’s father, Izik ben David Zirndorfer (1775-1820), only published two tractates and David Zirndorfer only published four tractates. The title page, in red and black ink describes the volumes contents, first noting the presence the usual commentaries and then adds that this edition has additional features, among them the inclusion of the glosses of R. Joel Sirkes (Bayit Hadash, 1561–1640), R. Elijah of Vilna (Vilna Gaon, GRA, 1720–1797), R., Isaiah Berlin (Isaiah Pick; 1725–1799), R. Noah Hayyim Zevi Hirsch Berlin (1734–1802), and R. Aryeh Loeb Berlin (1738–1814). It is dated with the verse, “for according to these words I have made a covenant with you and with Israel” (Exodus 34:27). The verso of the title page has the caution against confusing contemporary gentiles with those from an earlier period when terms such as akum or nocri are used. David Zirndorfer’s introduction follows in which he enumerates additional virtues of this edition, among them the quality of the paper, explanation of loaz terms in Rashi and tosafot, and additional Piskei Tosafot. After the conlusion of the tractate is the prayer to be recited when entering a Beit Midrash, Piskei Tosafot, and Rabbenu Asher (Rosh).

The press originally belonged to Hayyim ben Zevi Hirsch. After Hayyim's death (September 11, 1772), the print-shop was managed for two years by his widow, who issued four titles. After she remarried in 1774, her husband, Isaac ben David Zirndorfer, directed the press with the assistance of Hayyim's son, issuing a variety of books. Subsequently Zirndorfer operated the press alone, and then was joined by his son, David, in 1778, who succeeded his father in 1818. The press remained in the family’s hands until 1868.
