First edition. Six parts in one. viii, 248, 18, 39 pp., 209:130 mm., nice margins, usual light age staining. A very good copy bound in contemporary boards, rubbed.

Description

A Samaritan translation of the Pentateuch, with an addendum entitled "Kritische Studien" critical studies. The translation was published in sequels, and then bound together with a general title page (dated 1875) and the eight page introduction. On the verso of each title page is the name of the printer.

The following is the arrangement. Bereishis: [4], 62pp., 1873; Shmos [4], 63-116 pp., 1874; Vayikra [4], 117-152 pp. 1874; Bamidbar [4], 153-204 pp., 1874; Devarim [4], 205-248 pp., 1874. The first addendum is comments and research about variant versions found in an Oxford University manuscript. That addendum was published in 1872 and is [4], 18 pp. The final section is the Kritische Studien 39 pp. (printed from left to right) 1875.

Adolf (Elhanan) Brüll(1846-1908) studied at the universities of Vienna, Prague, and Breslau, and at the Breslau Jewish Theological Seminary. From 1871 to 1903 he taught at the Philanthropin Jewish High School in Frankfort. His special field of study was the Samaritan translation of the Pentateuch. Among his published works are: Fremdsprachliche Redensarten... in den Talmuden und Midraschim (1869); Trachten der Judenim nachbiblischen Alterthum (1873); Kritische Studien ueber Samaritanische Manuscript-Fragmente (1875); Zur Geschichte und Literatur der Samaritaner (1876); and Beitraege zur Kenntnis der juedisch-deutschen Literatur (1877). Bruell also edited articles in the Populaerwissenschaftliche Monatsblaetter zur Belehrung ueber das Judentum fuer Gebildete aller Konfessionen (1881–1908), to which he contributed numerous articles. He wrote a biography of David Einhorn and was a contributor to the Jewish Encyclopedia.
