Novellae on tractates by R. Jehiel Michael ben Samuel Kittsee. There is an approbation from R. Moses Sofer (Hatam Sofer), who describes him as one of the leading notables of our community whom God has greatly blessed and filled with his bounty... despite which his preoccupation all his life has been with the Torah, business being secondary.” It is followed by a brief introduction from R. Kittsee in which he apologizes for any errors and writes that he entitled it Shalmei Nedavah (a free will offering) for he printed the book to give without cost. Furthermore, the word Shalmei includes the name of his father, Samuel and of his mother, Leah, and at the end his name. He concludes that if successful he will print additional novellae. This was the case, for a second volume of his novellae, also entitled Shalmei Nedavah, was printed in 1842, The text, in two columns in rabbinic type, covers several tractates.
R. Jehiel Michael ben Samuel Kittsee (c. 1775–1845), Hungarian talmudic scholar. His family name was originally Figdor, an abbreviation of Avigdor, the name of the founder of the family who lived in the small town of Kittsee near Pressburg, after which he came to be called. He studied under R. Mordecai Banet. He was a businessman, well known for his generosity, but spent most of his time in study. R. Kittsee married the daughter of R. Mendel Jacob, known as Kopel Teven, a leader of Hungarian Jewry in the 18th century.
