Description |
|
"Power corrupts, absolute power corrupts absolutely" can easily be identified as the theme of this book. Joseph Shalom was appointed by the Rabbis of Hebron, head and treasurer of the Hebron Charity Fund in 1854 to raise funds and pay off the overwhelming debt of the Kollel. Joseph Shalom organized fundraisers and dispersed them all over the world for this purpose. After several years, to the dismay of the rabbis, the debts had not diminished at all. They summoned Joseph Shalom to produce a detailed accounting of the kollel's financial affairs under his reign - he refused. A similar summons from the rabbinate of Jerusalem and Tiberias was likewise refused - indeed our treasurer obtained the assistance of the British Counsel and caused the incarceration of several rabbis. This work denounces Joseph Shalom and deals with the issues against him and the entire sad affair. |
