Detailed
Description
This book has its origins in the dispute that erupted in the community of Naszod/Entradam in the year of publication. Entradam was a tiny village that was a suburb of Naszod in Rumania. The majority population of Entradam was strictly orthodox Jews, and it was the seat of the chief rabbi of Naszod. In 1910 an argument blew up over a local shochet (ritual slaughterer), Avraham Hayyim of Senshartz (Ula-Sant Georgi), who was declared unfit for his job by the chief rabbi, Avraham Joshua Freund (1855-1932). A significant segment of the community refused to accept R. Freund’s decision and a long and bitter controversy ensued involving numerous rabbis on both sides. The shochet’s supporters were mainly hasidim of Vizhnitz, as he was, and the controversy developed into a battle between Vizhnitzers and the hasidim of R. Freund, who had become known as the Naszoder Rebbe. Interestingly, R. Dovid Moskovitch – also of Naszod – became an active supporter of the Vizhnitz faction, as did his mentor, R. Moshe Shmuel Glasner. This may have been due to the general antipathy between them and R. Freund on account of their Zionist leanings and his vigourous – often vicious - opposition to Zionism. (Once before the Neila prayer on Yom Kippur R. Freund declared: "It is not because they are Zionists that they are evildoers. It is because they are evildoers that they are Zionists.") This book contains a polemical response to the book Milchemet Mitzvah published earlier that year by partisans of R. Freund.
