R. Baruch Angel (1595–1670), talmudist, preacher, and kabbalist in Salonika, was one of the outstanding scholars of his age. He was a student of R. Asher ha-Kohen ben Ardut and later became head of the Talmud Torah Yeshivah; his students included R. David Conforte, R. Solomon b. Samuel Florentin, and R. Isaac Florentin. In 1651, R. Angel was one of the seven foremost scholars of the city. He signed a regulation dealing with a tax on clothing. He was invited to accept the appointment of rabbi of Smyrna but refused, because he was unwilling to encroach upon the domain of the incumbent rabbi. In addition to Hiddushei ha-Rav R. Angel wrote responsa, glosses to the Shulhan Arukh, Hoshen Mishpat, the latter included in the Doresh Mishpat (Salonika, 1650) of his disciple, R. Solomon Florentin. A work on tractates Ketubbot and Shevu'ot exists in manuscript in the Israel National Library.
