William Freund (1806–1894), classical philologist and educator. Freund, who was born in Kempen (now Kepno), Poznan province, was a Greek and Latin scholar, and until he was nearly 50 devoted himself mainly to the compilation of dictionaries and aids to the study of Greek and Latin classics. They included a Latin dictionary (1834–45), and a German-Latin-Greek dictionary for use in schools (1848–55). From 1855 to 1870 he was director of the Jewish high school in Gleiwitz. Freund wrote many educational pamphlets, as well as several on the legal position of the Jews in Germany. He was instrumental in bringing A. Geiger as rabbi to Breslau. In 1843–44 he edited the periodical Zur Judenfrage in Deutschland. |
