Description		    This pamphlet relates to the celebrated court case against Leopold Kompert (1822-1866), the German Jewish writer and journalist based in Vienna who was also co-editor of the Jahrbuch fuer Israeliten. The case centered around his publication in the 1863/64 jahrbuch of an article by Heinrich Graetz (1817-1891), the renowned Jewish historian, in which, according to the public prosecutor, ‘the teaching about the Messiah of the Jewish Orthodox church was offended’. Isaac Hirsch Weiss (1815-1905), the haskalah scholar and author of works on the ‘Oral Law’, took a prominent part in the Kompert trial, publishing a pamphlet entitled Netzach Yisrael (Vienna, 1864) in support of the testimony of Lazar Horowitz (1803-1868) and Isaac Noah Mannheimer (1793-1865) – both of them Jewish religious leaders in Vienna (orthodox and reform respectively). The two of them had defended Graetz in court with regard to his views on the Jewish belief in the Messiah. This booklet was written by R. Schidloff (d.1894), an orthodox traditionalist, to deliver a point-by-point refutation of Weiss’s pamphlet. Kompert was eventually found guilty and fined for the article’s publication.
