Description		    Critical response to R. Israel Kushta who criticized R. Elmaleh’s work on the will of the caid, Nissim Samama. The nature of the work is suggested by the title, from, “He uncovers deep things from darkness (megaleh amukot mini hoshekh)” (Job 12:22). It states that it is a correct response to R. Israel Kushta who came with a kuntres small in size and quality, “wiothout form nor comeliness” (Isaiah 53:2), “he knows what is in the darkness” (Daniel 2:22). Below it states, “Who is this that darkens counsel by words” (38:2). Kuntres Megaleh Amukot Mini Hoshekh is dated, “I will suffer my faithfulness to fail ולא אשקר (638 = 1878)” (Psalms 89:34). There is an introduction and then a small note followed by the text in a single column in rabbinic type. It is comprised of R. Kushta’s comments immediately followed by R. Elmaleh’s detailed refutation.

Elijah ben Abraham Elmaleh belonged to the renowned family of rabbis and communal leaders in Turkey, Morocco, and Italy which traced its originate to Spain. R. Elijah ben Abraham Elmaleh was a lawyer and jurist. Among his other works are Nahalat Avot (Leghorn, 1874) on the will of the caid, Nissim Samama of Tunis, which culminated in Kuntres Megaleh Amukot Mini Hoshekh, and Mishpat ha-Yerushah (Leghorn, 1878).
