Presentation piece of paper which was inserted along with a book seeking a book-fee for the enclosed book. This bookplate was made to accompany R. Matityahu Yehezkel Gutman's book Bikkurei Yehezkel, a commentary on the tractate Avot, (first published in 1911 [and reissued in 1954 in a new edition]).The books were sent out in the hope that the recipients would respond with a donation "according to the goodness of his heart."
R. Gutman was born in Jassy in 1891, immigrated to Israel in 1948 and died in Jaffa, Israel in 1972. He was a prolific author whose works include: Agadot Talmud Yerushalmi, Sefer Imre Yehezkel Hahadash, Bet Yisrael, Belz , Divre Yehezkel, and many others totaling over 20 books including many biographies of famous Rabbis.
On the bookplate the signatory name is spelled S. Gutmann. It is possible that this is R. Matityahu Yehezkel's father, since his father's name was Shalom. |
