Description		    First edition of this autobiographical and mystical work by R. Abraham ben Hananiah dei Galicchi Jagel (Yagel, 1553-after 1623). It was written by him while he was in prison, incarcerated on several occasions due to accusations by business associates, particularly Samuel Almagiati, that he had carryied a small dagger, dined at night with a Christian, and for slander. Much of what is known about Jagel’s life is from Gei Hizzayon, an autobiographical and ethical work in the style of Dante. In the last and longer imprisonment he composed portions of Gei Hizzayon. Jagel later practiced medicine, but retained close ties with several Jewish bankers. He settled in Luzzara, in the vicinity of Mantua in the 1570s, where, after his father’s death, he inherited the latter’s banking business, a venture, by his own admission, for which he was unqualified. This is the first edition of Gei Hizzayon. The title page is dated, “may his name be continued as long as the sun שמש (640 = 1880)” (Psalms 72:17). There is an approbation from R. Moses Pardo, an introduction from Abraham Baruch Moni [Sephardi Tahor], Megillot Kinnot, and then the text of Gei Hizzayon.

Jagel also wrote Mosh’ah Hosim (Venice, 1587), remedies for the plague through prayer and fasts; Lekah Tov, the first Jewish catechism, frequently repoublished and translated into several languages; Beit Ya’ar Levanon, a scientific encyclopedia, mostly unpublished; Be’er Sheva, also an encyclopedic compendium; Additional works on philosophy, astrology, and halakhah remain unpublished.
