Book of poetry by Samuel Hayyim Zelman. Nitsanim is dedicated to the famed Italian scholar and Bible commentator R. Samuel David Luzzatto (Shadal, 1800–1865) wisdhing him comfort for the death of his daugther Mariam. The poems are in a single column in square vocalized Hebrew within a thin border, in most but not all cases in stanzas of four lines. Many of the poems are dediated to individuals, for example two to Mordecai Ashkenazi and another to Joseph Almanzi. Among the subject matter of poems are, Ther is a God Who judges; My sin I recall; an ass in the skin of a lion; On the day of Rosh HaShanah; Tishah b’Av; and On events in the land of Egypt. Nitsanim is bound in its original blue wrappers.
Samuel Hayyim Zelman (1808-1885) was an Austrian-Italian poet. He was educated at the rabbinical College in Padua, where he was a favorite student of Shadal. Among his other works are Kina per a Morte de S. D. Luzzatto (Padua, 1865), Primi Discorsi di Rab Melza (Trieste, 1854), Ne’im zemirot Shemu'el, o, yelid kinor: zemirot ve-shirim (Drohobitsh, 1886); and Le Parole di un Ignorante al Dotti (Trieste, 1855), this last against demagogic writers. |
