Detailed
Description
First edition of this ethical work by R. Hayyim ben Menahem Schwarz. The title page sates that it is, ethical “wisdom and instruction” (Proverbs 1:2) to instruct Benei Jeshurun in, “the way of faith” (Psalms 119:30) and fear of the Lord. There is an introduction from R. Schwarz in which he concludes that the reader should excuse him if he finds anything from another source not properly attributed, followed by three paragraphs in which he addresses that issue. The text, set in a single column in square letters, is comprised two parts, each made up of a series of essays on related subjects. The first part, on wisdom includes wisdom, jealousy, humility, lack of gratitude, Talmud Torah, companionship and raising children, faith, awe and love, and affliction. The second part, mizvah, includes Shabbat Kodesh and Mo’edei HaShem, arba’ah parshiot, Pesah, and other festivals, each topic made up of several parts, and gemilut hesed and derekh erets. The entire work is eminently readable, as R. Schwarz writes in a clear and lucid style.
