Description		    On the history of circumcision among Jews by R. Samuel ben Zevi Kohen (b. 1865). The first Hebrew title page describes Ot Berit as being a record of circumcisison from the time of our father Abraham until the present, and notes that the author is a doctor and mohel. It has the verse, “And you shall circumcise the flesh of your foreskin; and it shall be a sign of the covenant between me and you” (Genesis 17:11). On the verso is a German title page, in which the book is described as Die Geschichte der Beschneidung bei den Juden von den altesten Zeiten bis auf die Gegenwart. Ot Berit is dedicated to the author’s father, Zevi Kohen ben Elhanan and his late mother, Hannah Leah. A table of contents follows, listing the books thirty three chapters, then a brief preface, introduction, and the text, which is set in a single column in square letters. At the end of the book is a bibliography of literature in several languages, among them German, French, English, and Russian. Among the chapter headings are milah according to the Bible, the source of milah according to the books of the Greeks and Romans, according to Herodtus, decrees against milah, milah according to the Rambam, recent laws on milah, opposition to milah among Jews, reasons for milah with seven subheadings, defects in the aver, tumtum and androgynous, the time of milah for an ill child, the flow of blood after milah, stopping the blood, the nails, Orlah, and development of customs related to milah.
