Detailed Description |
|
Rare and highly unusual copy of an early work on Jewish history by Johannes Remond (1769-93). This copy has a stamp on the title page with the Nazi eagle and the name of the Reichsinstitut für Geschichte des neuen Deutschlands - Bibliothek (Reichs Institute for the history of the new Germany – library). The full title of the book is Versuch einer Geschichte der Ausbreitung des Judenthums von Cyrus bis auf den gänzlichen Untergang des Jüdischen Staats (A provisional history of the spread of Judaism from the time of Cyrus to the fall of the Jewish state). Remond is described as professor at the Königlich Grossbritanisch historischen Institutus zu Göttingen. There is a dedication to the hochwohlgerboren Michaelis, presumably Johann David Michaelis (1717–1791), professor of oriental languages in Goettingen, author of several books on Judaism and son of the theologian and orientalist Ch. B. Michaelis (therefore hochwohlgerboren). The text, in a single column in Fraktur, is divided into thirty-seven chapters by periods of early Jewish history. This copy appears unused, as leaves are still attached. A rare work, not in most leading libraries with Judaica collections.
