Description
On the religious and political practices of the Jews by Bonaventura Mayer, professor of Oriental languages. The full title is, Die Juden unserer zeit: einer gedrängte darstellung ihrer religiösen und politischen verhältnisse in den drei alten erdtheilen (The Jews of our time: a concise representation of their religious and political practices in the three old continents. Die Juden unserer zeit is dedicted to the Bishop of Eichstadt, Grafen von Reisach. Carl August. There is a forward from Mayer, and a table of contents followed by the text in Fraktur. The book describes Jewish life by sects and countries, providing numerous descriptions of a wide variety of communities. Among the many chapter headings are, Sects of the Jews in Russia, including Chabad, Karaites, Sabbathnets, and Isrelites in Odessa. For the Jews in Galicia there are chapters on their religious and political relations. Jews in Pressburg, Pesth, Arad, and Szegedin all get chapters, as do Jews in Wien, Preussen, Breslau and Deutschland. There are chapters on new and old communities in Hamburg, as well as Jewish sects in Holland, Portuguese Jews in Amsterdam, Chassidaer in Amsterdam, das Mittelvok in hoolland, and die Neuerer in Amsterdam. There are chapters on Jews in European Turkey, Constantinople, on Isaac Luria, on Chaim, Lurias Schuler (R. Hayyim Vital), Joseph Caro, the Jews in Hebron, Barbary, Algiers, and Morocco, as well as much more. Die Juden unserer zeit concludes with an appendix listing mitzvot in two columns, Hebrew and Greman.
