Description
Large prayer leader’s mahzor according to the Ashkenaz rite. This volume, part one of two, has a sumptuous title page comprised of detailed depictions of Moses on the left with the tablets of the law and Aaron on the right with his priestly garments and the ketoret. At the top is a vignette of King David playing the harp with winged cherubim at the side; at the bottom is a vignette Jacob asleep, with angels ascending and descending the ladder to heaven. The text states that there are “two [great] lights; the large light to rule” (cf. Genesis 1:16) Shabbat, festivals, and Roshei Hadashim, and, “and the small light to rule” daily, Purim, Tisha b’Av, kinnot, selihot, nissu’in, and milah. It informs that the text is accompanied by commentaries according to Pardes. The title page is dated with the verse “But I have trusted in your loving kindness; my heart shall rejoice in your salvation” (Psalms 14:6). The verso of the title page has approbations. The text begins with decorative letters. It is set in large type and accompanied on the sides by the commentary of R. Moses Shadil in rabbinic type on the sides. This volume includes daily and Shabbat services, and includes selihot, Hallel, yoztros, Purim, Pesah, Shavu’ot, kinnot for Tisha b’Av, nissu’in, and milah. The volume concludes with Haderet Kodesh from Rabbenu Yonah.
