Rare edition of tractate Hullin printed in Sudilikov (Sudyklow). Printed as a full folio tractate, the text is accompanied by Hiddushei ha-Maharsha at the bottom of the Talmud page. This edition of Hullin is not recorded in most of the standard works listing Talmud editions and individual tractates, including Habermann’s update of the Ma’amar al Defusot ha-Talmud. The Thesaurus does list it, noting that a copy is in the JNUL.
Sudilikov was home to several presses, beginning with that of Samuel ben Mordecai ha-Levi Horowitz who established his printing-press in 1818. In 1832 three new presses opened, including two by members of the Madfis family. An interesting characteristic of Sudilikov imprints, according to Friedberg, is the attempt to conceal the place of publication, often printing, in large letters, the names of other locations in order to mislead purchasers. This edition of Hullin clearly states that it is a Sudilikov imprint. Sudilikov further notes that these printers were diligent, working day and night without respite, producing books like the grass in the field. |
