Detailed Description |
|
Comprehensive work on Hebrew grammar in German by Wilhelm Friedrich Hezel. The full title is Ausführliche hebräische Sprachlehre: nach berichtigten Grundfässen durch forfältige Vergleichung der übrigen morgenländischen Dialette zum Gebrauch seiner Zuhörer. The volume is, as described, a detailed Hebre grammar. There is a dedication to Jahann Salamo Semler, a forward by Hezel. Next is a detailed table of contents, followed by the text, set in Fraktur with occasional Hebrew. The volume concludes with an addenda and errata. There are also several attractive head-pieces.
Hezel was a theologian who served as professor in Tartu University, in Riga. Among his many scientific writings from different domains, was a translation in the spirit of rationalism of the New Testament in 1809. As a result, he was disentitled from reading exegetic disciplines in 1813., and eventually forced to leave due to the gradual Russification of the university. Hezel was also the author of Neue hebräische Sprachlehre für Anfänger (New Hebrew grammar for beginners, Dorpat, 1804); W.F. Hezel's Anweisung zum Chaldäichen bey Ermanglung alles mündlichen Unterrichts (Introduction to Chaldean, Lemgo, 1787); Geschichte der hebräischen Sprache und Litteratur: nebst einem Anhang, welcher eine kurze Einleitung in die, mit der hebräischen Sprache, werwandten orientalischen Dialekte enthält (History of the Hebrew language and Literature: together with an appendix containing a short introduction to them, the Hebrew language, and oriental dialects, Halle, 1776); and der Weltweisheit Doctors ..: Anweisung zur Arabischen Sprache: bey Ermangelung alles mündlichen Unterrichts: nach des Verfassers Erleicht. Arabischen Grammatik und Chrestomathie. Erster Theil (World Wisdom Doctors, Introduction to Arabic, Leipzig, 1784).
