Across the top of this paper is a sentence taken from Talmud Bavli, Shabbat 33. Certain letters are in bold, so that the date can be discerned. The sentence states that R. Yohanan explained a verse using the word Vayichan as meaning he set up bathhouses. And, since this paper is to be used for raising funds for bathhouses and mikvaot, it is a fitting sentence.
This sheet of paper is printed on both sides, and is in many sections. It appears to be for fundraising. The front has four sections. Two are in Hebrew, one in Yiddish [called Oyfruf], and the fourth has some paragraphs in German, and a paragraph in English. All of the sections deal with the need for Mikvaot and bathhouses in Jerusalem. The German and English sections are signed by doctors - showing a medical need for physical cleanliness to prevent diseases. One is signed by Dr. Feiwel Buffeles, and the second by Dr. A. Masie.
The upper right section (in Hebrew) is signed by Shlomo Zalman Levi, Asher Dov Zisman and Yechiel Michel Tukatzinsky, among others, for the members of the supervisory committee for Mikvaot. The lower right is a letter signed by both R. Shneur Zalman (formerly of Lublin) and by R. Samuel Salant.
The back of this sheet of paper continues one of the German letters, signed by Dr. E. Friedmann, and dated 13 October, 1899. There is a letter in French signed by Dr. L. Rothstein on 25 October, 1899. Another letter in German signed by Dr. J. Krischefsky signed 15 October, 1899, and a letter from Dr. Js. D. Arbella, in German.
The reverse side also has a letter from R. Yitzhak Blazer, [R.] Hayyim Berlin. And a final note saying they too participate in regards to this great mitzvah - signed Dovid Zvi Shlomo ben Eliezer Menahem, Yosef Hayyim Sonnenfeld, and Zalman HaKohen Rubin. |
