A dire warning, issued by the Va'ad HaMercazi Mishmeret HaShabbat, from the Rabbis and Gaonim: now that electricity has expanded in the Holy City of Jerusalem, to our distress we have heard that there are people who are lenient with turning on and extinguishing the electric light on the Holy Sabbath because [they do not understand what] is the essence of this prohibited activity [on the Sabbath].
Therefore we, with this, announce to our brothers, the children of Israel, that it is completely prohibited to turn on and to turn off electric lights, just as it prohibited to light or extinguish any fire.
And one must know to be careful and to cause others to be careful not to profane the Holy Sabbath!
