Detailed
Description
Bar mitzvah sermon by R. Meir Ganz. The title page informs that it was delivered on the day that Moses ben Zalman entered into the covenant (berit) of the Lord. It is accompanied by minhat mazkeret le-ma’an tihyeh lo le-mishmeret. The text is comprised of introductory passages followed by interpretive material, the former in Hebrew in bold square unvocalized letters, the latter in Yiddish in square letters. The text begins with “R. Simeon ben Halafta says the Holy One, blessed be He, did not find a utensil that sufficient to held a blessing for Israel except for peace, as it says, ‘The Lord will give strength to his people; the Lord will bless his people with peace’” (Ukzin 3:12). Within this Yiddish discourse only there are brief Latin quotes. The second discourse is based on the verse, “And you, Solomon my son, know the G-d of your father, and serve him with a perfect heart and with a willing mind; for the Lord searches all hearts, and understands all the imaginations of the thoughts; if you seek him, you will find him; but if you forsake him, he will cast you off forever” (I chronicles 28:9). Another verse utilized is, “If I have looked at the sun when it shone, or at the moon moving in brightness; And my heart has been secretly enticed, or my mouth has kissed my hand; This would also be an iniquity to be punished by the judge; for I should have denied the G-d who is above” (Job 31:26-28). Not all opening material is from biblical or Mishnayot sources.
