Description		    Illustrated by Nahum Gutman (1898–1980), Israel painter and illustrator. His work is a good example of the local expressionist painting typical of the 1920s and 1930s. Gutman, the son of the writer Simhah Ben-Zion, was taken to Erez Israel from Rumania at the age of seven. He enrolled at the Bezalel School of Art in 1913 and studied under Boris Schatz and Abel Pann. After a brief period of service in the Jewish Legion in World War I, Gutman continued his education in Vienna. He studied print making with Hermann Struck in Berlin. Here he met Bialik and illustrated his works. Gutman returned to Erez Israel in 1926 and participated in the "Modern Artists" exhibition in Tel Aviv in 1927. He worked in oils and watercolors, made drawings, and also illustrated children's stories. Gutman designed scenery for the Ohel Theater in 1935 and a mosaic for the chief rabbinate building in Tel Aviv in 1961. His subjects were mainly landscapes, local scenes, and some portraits. He was influenced early in his career by landscape painters of the Paris School and his art developed a decorative feel, combining light and rapid line with pale, luminous colors. Gutman's literary talents expressed themselves mainly in the writing of prose, especially children's stories. He was awarded the Israel Prize in 1978. Among the collections of short stories he published are: Sippurim Mezuyyarim (1950), Ir Ketannah va-Anashim bah Me'at (1959), and many children's tales of which the best known is the series Be-Erez Lobengulu Melekh Zulu (1940– ). Books illustrated by Gutman include Esther (1932); Passover Haggadah (1952); and Bialik's Va-Yehi ha-Yom (1965).
