Detailed
Description
On the renowned Vilna Gehetto by R. Hayyim Khaykel ben Samuel Asher ha-Levi Lunski. The title page describes it as טפוסים וצללים illustrations and traces, written at a time of troubles. There is an introduction from Dr. H. Yavin and, at the end, a letter to the author from the Zionist Histradut in Vilna written by Dr. Joseph Regfensburg and director Moses Kohen. The text of Meha-Geto ha-Vilna begins with Vilna in the year 1917, followed by Parzufim, which are verbal vignettes of positions in Vilna, beginning with the Rosh ha-Yeshivah, and including Rabban shel ha-Po’alim, moca’ir Sefarim, ha-Maskil, ha-Shulhani, ha-melamed, ha-muyuhas, and many other. These vignettes are colorfully written to give a lively and realistic picture of Vilna. This section is followed by Temunot ve-Ziorim, which presents a different view of aspects of Vilna. At the end of Meha-Geto ha-Vilna is a page of errata and the letter noted above.

R. Lunski was the librarian incharge of the reading room of the important Strashun Library in Vilna. He was one of the most popular figures in Vilna.
