Addressed to R. Samuel Ben-Vaish (1738-1817), a personal friend and senior Judge of the Meknes Rabbinical court. R. Jacob b. Jekuthiel Berdugo (1783–1843), dayyan and poet, was known for his works which include Shufrei de-Ya'akov, responsa (1910); Gallei Amikta, a commentary on Mayim Amukkim of Judah Berdugo (1911); Kol Ya'akov, liturgical poems (1844). To'afot Re'em or Karnei Re'em, on Rashi and Elijah Mizrahi, is still in manuscript (Ms. Jerusalem National Library, Ms. Heb. 8°3839, and 1448). Several more unpublished works are known in various collections. R. Berdugo was renown as a very holy man and many wonderful stories about the miracles that surrounded him are recounted to this day.
