Detailed
Description
First edition of this multi-part work consisting of introductory discourses to various popular aggadah from the Talmud, midrashim, and Zohar and brief discourses on Talmudic methodology and disputed issues in the Talmud by R. Abraham ben Judah Leib of Przemysl (17th cent.). R. Abraham, who served as rabbi in Ulanov, Galicia, initially intended to publish his father’s Ez Kol Peri. For that purpose he traveled to Fuerth, but the court factor, Model of Ansbach, persuaded him to instead publish his own book, Petah ha-Ohel. This work is in two parts, each with its own title page and foliation. The first title page states that it is a wondrous work, entirely new, there was not like it under the sun. The second title page is more detailed, explaining that it is on Talmudic methodology and differences and disputes between tanna’im and amora’im, “studied and researched as has not been done, connected and bound, ‘rope by rope’ (Shabbat 113a, Pesahim 11a), ‘pulled and drawn’” (Bava Batra 86a) . . .” The first title page is dated, “And the Lord had said to Abram, Get out from your country, לך לך מארצך (451 = 1691) and from your family, and from your father’s house, to a land that I will show you; [And I will make of you a great nation], and I will bless you, and make your name great; and you shall be a blessing” (Genesis 12:1-2). The second title page has the date, “So I will sing praise to your name for ever, as I daily perform my vowכן אזמאה שמך לעד לשלמי נדרי יום (451)” (Psalms 61:9) R. Abraham’s introduction follows, informing that the title is from the verse concerning the patriarch Abraham, who “‘sat in the tent door (petah ha-ohel)’ (Genesis 18:1); and I have certainly opened a good opening for those who sit in the tent of the Torah, in order to realize a benefit from this small work . . .”

The text follows, ordered alphabetically, in two columns in rabbinic letters. Petah ha-Ohel is based on kabbalistic and aggadic works. An example of the subject matter are the entries for the letter alef, beginning with אדם וחוה Adam, Eve, Cain, and Abel,” the entry encompassing the Zohar, tractate Sotah, several midrashim, Yefeh To’ar, and other works; followed by אותיות אלף בית (letters of the alphabet); אבות ואמהות (patriarchs and matriarchs); ארץ ישראל (the land of Israel and the other lands); אומות העולם (other nations); and אכילה ושתיי' (eating, drinking, washing of one’s hands, and birkhat ah-mazon). The text concludes with an index of verses by entry. In part two, also organized alphabetically, the index of the entries precedes the text. R. Isaac Lampronti (1679-1756) reputedly made use of Petah ha-Ohel in his monumental Pahad Yizhak.
